Preparing for Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is not for everyone. However, if you have discussed your options with a plastic surgeon, are in good health, have realistic expectations, and understand the limitations, risks, and potential side effects of this procedure, then odds are you are a good candidate. If you have met with your doctor’s approval and are scheduled for surgery, you will want to plan ahead. This is an exciting and stressful time. Going in prepared can alleviate many of your breast augmentation day stresses.

You don’t need to bring much with you to your breast augmentation procedure. Necessary medications, paperwork, and a small bag of essentials is all you need. After all, being an outpatient surgery, you will go home the same day. To prepare in advance, be sure you have made arrangements for any childcare or care for other dependent persons in your home. Make sure your needed prescriptions are filled and conveniently located, not only for the day of your surgery, but so they are easily accessible during your recovery period. Be sure you have food, snacks, and fluids on hand and minimize any work you will need to do at home or on the job so you can enjoy a few days of recovery. Plan in advance for someone to drive you to and from the hospital or clinic, and if possible for someone to stay with you during the first 24 hours of recovery. Be sure to ask your doctor for details on when you can resume regular activities and more strenuous activities such as exercising and sex.

These are just the tips in preparing for the day of your breast augmentation. To prepare for the surgery itself, there are some steps you must take to ensure that your body is physically ready for the surgery as well. First, stop or reduce cigarette smoking before the procedure and at least for a little while afterward. If this is a major concern, you will want to discuss it with your doctor prior to the procedure. Avoid alcohol in the days prior to the procedure and ensure that you are eating a healthy diet. Do not exercise vigorously for 24-48 hours before your breast augmentation. Ensure that you are taking any prescribed medications as directed and make sure your plastic surgeon is aware of which medications you are taking.

The night before your breast augmentation, you must fast. This means no food or drinks, even water after midnight. You will also want to shower and scrub the surgical areas well with antimicrobial soap or Hibacleanse. Do not reapply lotion, makeup, oils, or deodorant after this particular shower. The morning of your augmentation surgery, you will want to wear loose clothing and slip on shoes. You can brush your teeth, but do not swallow any water. If you wear nail polish, remove it. This makes it easier for you to be monitored by the anesthesiologist.

If your surgeon offers any other tips for preparation, be sure to follow those as well.
